SUSTAINABLE MANAGEMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES (SUMNATURE)
CLOSING CONFERENCE
November 23, 2020, VIP Hotels, Maputo, Mozambique
Majority of Mozambican population is rural and heavily depends on natural resources for their daily basis; hence the wise and sustainable management of those resources is priority. Especially forests experience high pressure from communities and private sector through logging, charcoal production, deforestation for agriculture purposes and wildfires. Improvement in human capital is one of relevant paths to control this tendency.
The SuMNatuRe project aims to increase the capacity in natural resources management and land use planning by promoting higher education through interinstitutional collaboration between the University of Jyväskylä (Finland), Eduardo Mondlane University (Mozambique), Zambeze University (Mozambique) and University of Eastern Finland. During almost four years different initiatives were developed, namely short courses, field trips, higher education institution staff members and doctoral students exchanges and research projects related to forest use and management. The project is coming to the end by December 2020 and the Closing Conference is the platform to share results achieved by project and showcase the importance and benefits of academic cooperation between universities at national and international levels as well as to define future collaboration beyond the project lifetime.
Keynote researchers from institutions involved:
Almeida Sitoe – Professor, Silviculture and Ecology of Tropical Forests, Center for Agriculture and Natural Resource Studies (CEAGRE), Faculty of Agronomy and Forestry, Eduardo Mondlane University, Mozambique
Pekka Virtanen - Science Advisor, PhD, Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy, University of Jyväskylä, Finland
